Columbia, S.C. — Today, Jaime Harrison, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, offered the following statement in reaction to reports showing more than 2.4 million Americans filed for unemployment last week, including over 29,000 South Carolinians.
“More than half a million South Carolinians have now filed for unemployment relief in the last nine weeks alone, and the national unemployment rate is at its highest since the Great Depression,” Harrison said. “But if you were just watching Lindsey Graham operate this week, you would never know it. While South Carolina families suffer through this economic crisis, our senior senator spent his week fighting to cut unemployment relief and propping up his partisan inquiries — and now he is coasting into a four-day weekend without advancing a single measure to help out-of-work people in this state. But maybe Lindsey is just following the advice of one of his bosses, Mitch McConnell, who said last week that they just have not ‘yet felt the urgency’ to provide more relief to working people and small businesses.”
