Columbia, S.C. — Jaime Harrison, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, today released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that LGBT workers are protected by workplace protections under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
“This is a watershed moment for equality in the American workplace,” Harrison said. “Today’s decision is long past due for hardworking LGBT South Carolinians, who until this ruling could be legally fired from their job because of their sexual orientation. Such discrimination runs counter to South Carolina values, and should have no place in this state. It is simple: employees should be judged by their job performance, not by their gender identity or sexual orientation.”
