Harrison responds to Graham’s opening statement

Columbia, S.C. — Sen. Lindsey Graham today used his position as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee to attack healthcare protections for South Carolina families, calling the Affordable Care Act a “disaster” and advocating for its repeal. Jaime Harrison, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, offered the following response to Sen. Graham’s opening statement.

“With the ACA’s day in court just weeks away, it’s no wonder that Sen. Graham is rushing to fill this vacancy,” Harrison said. “He has tried and failed to repeal Affordable Care Act the Senate, so is now trying to push repeal through the courts. Undoing this law would unleash chaos throughout our healthcare system during a pandemic — pulling coverage away from nearly 250,000 South Carolinians and stripping protections for the over 900,000 South Carolinians with pre-existing conditions. The real disaster for South Carolina healthcare is Sen. Graham holding this seat.”

In August, a November 10 date was set for oral arguments in California vs. Texas, the lawsuit which if successful would gut the 2010 healthcare reform law and its insurance protections for the over 900,000 South Carolinians living with pre-existing conditions — in the middle of a global pandemic.
